A trip to the world famous prehistoric stone circle of Stonehenge.
Starting from Highfield Campus cycle north over the Avenue to Candler's
Ford. At the first round about turn west in order to bypass the
village on Knightwood Road. After leaving it turn west again onto
Hook Road and follow the A3090 till Ampfield (40/23). Going on north
Clypit Road brings the first off road experience crossing Ampfield
Woods. In Lower Slackstead (40/25) stay on the road going north
and crossing Parnholt Wood to Kings Somborne (36/31). There turn
west and cross the River Test to reach Houghton. A combination of
off and on road brings you to Nether Wallop (30/37) and finally
to a bridle way (27/37) that heads north along a military training
area. After reaching the B3048 turn west onto a bridle way that
ends in Newton Tony (22/41) from where Amesbury Road leads further
to the west. Crossing a road follow the north border of Boscombe
Down Airfield (19/41) to Amesbury and from there over some bridle
way to Stonehenge (12/42), the turning point of this trip. Over
bridle ways touching Springbottom Farm (12/40) Great Durnford (14/38)
is reached. From there small streets lead to High Post (15/36.5)
and Hurdcott (17/34). A path brings you to the old roman road that
is joint after Stock Bottom Farm (19/33). Over Middle Winterslow
(25/33) keep on going to the east where finally the Test River (34/31)
will block your way. Cross over and turn south onto the Test Valley
way till the cycling path ends near Stonymarsh (34/27) from where
small roads lead eastwards via Michelmersh and Braishfield to Lower
Slackstead (40/25). There take the Clypit Road to Ampfield (40/23)
and the A3090 and Hook Road to Chandler's Ford (42/23) that can
be surrounded on Knightwood road. After Chandler's Ford, use the
cycle path beside Castle Lane to the west and than the bridle way
up to Chillworth (41/19). From there only a short distance is left
to get back to Southampton.
