A visit to the Isle of Wight. Along the central hill range to the
west end of the island with its famous Needles.
From Town Quay take the car ferry to East Cowes. The crossing takes
about 50 minutes and during summer the ferry leaves every hour.
Use the chain ferry to cross over to West Cowes and than follow
the cycle trail along the Medina River to Newport. There turn west
and take the Tennyson Trail in Carisbrook (48/88). It will lead
you on top of the hill range till Freshwater Bay (35/86) in the
west. For the last kilometers to the Needles (29/85) the road must
be used, as the Tennyson trail becomes a footpath. The way back
leads over small roads to the River Yar and along it to Yarmouth
(36/90). There turn inland and follow the road eastwards via Wellow
(39/88) and Fife Houses (43/88). Now a small road leads first to
the north and joins than the coast road that returns to Cowes.
